No Egos, Just Wins: Inside the Lions’ Offense with Sam LaPorta
Even though the Lions have a new offensive coordinator in John Morton, it doesn’t feel like they’re starting from scratch. This squad’s been tight for years — the core guys know each other, trust each other, and more importantly, they know what matters: winning.
Sam LaPorta, who’s been a key piece of Detroit’s offensive puzzle, broke it down in a recent chat with SiriusXM NFL Radio. The vibe in Detroit? Selfless. Focused. All-in.
“The skill guys just want to win,” LaPorta said. “Ask anyone — Jameson Williams, for example — ‘You want 10 catches or a win?’ He’s gonna pick the W, no question. Even if it means he only gets two targets, maybe one deep shot, he’s cool with it.”
And it’s not just talk. LaPorta says even a star like Amon-Ra St. Brown, who could go off every game, is out there doing the dirty work without a second thought.
“(Amon-Ra) will literally go out there and block a nickel defender 25 times so David Montgomery can pound the rock. No complaints. Just ‘Whatever you need, coach.’ That’s rare in the NFL, man. A lot of guys want the spotlight. Not here.”
That team-first attitude is exactly why no one’s panicking over the loss of Ben Johnson. Sure, Johnson was a big deal. But the culture? The mindset? That’s what makes this offense tick. And that hasn’t changed.
As for John Morton — the new guy calling the shots — LaPorta’s already impressed. Early signs from camp show Morton’s not trying to reinvent the wheel. He’s smart, balanced, and most importantly, he gets the room.
“There’s a lot of mouths to feed in this offense,” LaPorta joked. “It’s like a mom with eight kids — everyone’s hungry, everyone wants a little love. And Johnny’s doing a great job keeping everybody happy.”
With a legit quarterback, a loaded group of playmakers, and a rock-solid culture, the Lions don’t need a miracle. If the offensive line holds up, it’s business as usual in 2025 — and that business is scoring points and stacking wins.
