Heat of the Moment: Brian Branch Explains Why He Lost His Cool With JuJu Smith-Schuster

From missed calls to mounting frustration — the Lions’ safety tells his side of the story.

Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch didn’t shy away from the truth after Sunday’s heated post-game altercation with Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
What started as a hard-fought matchup quickly turned into one of Week 6’s most viral moments when Branch slapped Smith-Schuster following the Lions’ 30–17 loss — a reaction that drew gasps across the NFL world.

After the game, Branch faced the cameras and, instead of deflecting blame, took full responsibility.

“I did a little childish thing,” Branch admitted, clearly frustrated. “But I’m tired of people doing stuff in between the play, and the refs don’t catch it. They be trying to bully me out there. I shouldn’t have did it — it was childish.”

What Pushed Branch Over the Edge

According to Branch, the moment that set him off came earlier in the game when Smith-Schuster blocked him in the back — a move Branch felt was both illegal and dangerous.
It wasn’t called by the officials, which only fueled his anger as the game wore on.

“I got blocked in the back illegally, and the ref didn’t do anything,” Branch said. “I could have got hurt off of that. But I still should not have done that. I should’ve showed it between the whistle, not after the game, and I apologize for that.”

His frustration wasn’t just about one play. The Lions’ young safety, known for his energy and competitiveness, has been battling physical matchups all season. This one just pushed him past his limit.

A Costly Moment for a Banged-Up Defense

The timing couldn’t be worse for Detroit. The Lions’ secondary is already riddled with injuries — Kerby Joseph is still recovering from a knee issue, and Avonte Maddox and Terrion Arnold remain sidelined.
If the NFL decides to fine or suspend Branch for the slap, Detroit could be walking into next week’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without another key piece on defense.

Facing Baker Mayfield and a top-tier passing offense, the Lions can’t afford another gap in their secondary.

Owning the Moment — and Learning From It

Branch’s honesty after the game showed maturity beyond his years. Instead of doubling down or blaming others, he openly acknowledged that his emotions got the better of him.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has always preached accountability and composure — and it looks like Branch got the message loud and clear.

“I should’ve showed it between the whistle, not after,” he repeated, emphasizing his regret.

This is the kind of growth fans like to see from a young player. Mistakes happen — but how you respond to them is what defines you.

Looking Ahead

As the Lions prepare for their next game, Branch’s focus now turns to turning that frustration into fuel. His passion and edge are part of what make him such a difference-maker on the field — he’ll just need to keep them in check next time the heat of the moment flares up.

The slap might have gone viral, but his response afterward? That’s what’ll stick with fans longer.
