The NFL wasted no time handing out punishment after Sunday’s fiery showdown between the Detroit Lions and the Washington Commanders. Defensive lineman Daron Payne has officially been suspended for one game following his altercation with Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
The incident unfolded late in the second quarter, when tensions boiled over after a physical play near the sideline. Cameras caught Payne throwing a clear punch that connected with St. Brown, sparking outrage from both benches and the crowd. While St. Brown was restrained by teammates, Payne’s swing was enough to get the league’s attention — and now, it’s cost him a game check.
NFL officials confirmed that Payne’s actions violated the league’s policy on “unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct.” The Commanders will now be without one of their top defensive players heading into Week 11 — a major setback for a defense already struggling to stop the run.
As for St. Brown, he’s chosen to keep things professional, saying postgame that “emotions run high” and that he’s just focused on helping the Lions keep their momentum going.
Detroit fans, however, haven’t been as forgiving. Many took to social media demanding accountability — and now, they’ve gotten it.
One thing’s clear: the Lions are playing with fire and passion this season, and they’re not backing down from anyone.
