Dan Campbell’s Lions Shake Up Roster, Say Goodbye (Again) to High-Motor LB

Below is your casual, engaging blog post based on headline #4:

The Detroit Lions aren’t waiting around for things to fix themselves. With a must-win matchup against the Giants looming, Dan Campbell and company decided to shake up the roster — and yes, that includes saying goodbye again to a familiar face.

Ty Summers Out… Again

The Lions officially cut ties with linebacker Ty Summers on Saturday, marking the second time this season the speedy defender has been shown the exit.

Summers has spent most of the year bouncing between the practice squad and the active roster, carving out his snaps almost exclusively on special teams. He logged 26 special teams snaps across two appearances this season — not a huge sample size, but enough to show the Lions what he brings.

And what he brings is speed. Summers made a name for himself in college by clocking a 4.51 in the 40-yard dash, and his scouting report still reads like a compressor fan on overdrive.

High-motor player who makes all the calls for the defense. Play strength is a plus,” NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote. A guy who brings energy, toughness, and gap discipline — basically, a Dan Campbell starter pack.

Still, with the Lions getting healthier on defense and two cornerbacks (Khalil Dorsey and D.J. Reed) returning from IR, somebody had to be the odd man out. This time, it was Summers.

Detroit Clears Space — and Adds Versatility

To balance the subtraction, the Lions elevated veteran tight end Anthony Firkser from the practice squad. Firkser isn’t a flashy pickup, but he’s one of those utility players coaches secretly love.

As SI.com’s Christian Booher noted, Firkser is exactly the kind of player who thrives under Campbell: a tight end who can line up at fullback, catch passes when needed, and handle the gritty assignments without complaining.

The veteran has experience playing both as a tight end and as a traditional fullback,” Booher wrote — something that matters more than ever now.

Because…

No LaPorta, Big Problem

The Lions lost tight end Sam LaPorta for the season after he underwent back surgery. Offensive coordinator John Morton didn’t sugarcoat the impact:

He’s a hell of an all-around blocker, receiver, he can do it all… he was really reliable on third down in the red zone.

LaPorta was third on the team in receiving yards (489) and had become a security blanket for the offense. Losing him this late in the season hurts — a lot. That’s why adding a do-it-all veteran like Firkser suddenly looks like a smart insurance policy.

A Make-or-Break Week for Detroit

After falling out of the NFC playoff picture last week, the Lions desperately need a rebound win. On paper, the matchup helps: the Giants are down to veteran Jameis Winston after rookie Jaxson Dart was ruled out.

But nothing in the NFL is guaranteed — especially not in November.

The Lions know it. Dan Campbell definitely knows it.

And these roster moves? They’re the clearest signal yet that Detroit is treating this weekend like a turning point, not just another date on the schedule.
