In his return from injured reserve, Jahmyr Gibbs is back in action, and the Lions are hoping their secondary can stabilize for Thanksgiving. Terrion Arnold remains in concussion protocol but has a chance to return, potentially restoring some much-needed depth. Detroit got a firsthand look at rotating their secondary against the Giants. Although the group struggled at times, they showed gradual improvement as the game progressed.
Amik Robertson split his snaps between the slot and outside cornerback on Sunday. With Arthur Maulet waived, Robertson could see more time at nickelback alongside Reed, especially if Arnold returns. This would restore the Lions’ Day 1 starting cornerback rotation, while Rock Ya-Sin stands ready if Arnold cannot play.
Kerby Joseph has yet to return to practice, leaving the Lions to prepare for their sixth game without the All-Pro safety. Thomas Harper has stepped in admirably, snagging an interception in the previous game, though he did show a few lapses.
Detroit’s secondary was vulnerable to trick plays and some deep throws from Jameis Winston during their overtime victory, marking their poorest statistical showing of the year. Yet, this group has demonstrated they can perform at a higher level.
Reed remains the anchor of the secondary, allowing only one catch on three targets. Ya-Sin surrendered no receptions on one target over 70 snaps. Robertson, however, had his toughest outing, giving up eight catches on 12 targets for 99 yards while rotating positions.
With returning players and more consistent reps, the Lions’ secondary hopes to tighten up. Robertson, in particular, could benefit from a steadier role, helping the group regain its form and build momentum heading into the holiday
showdown.
