Lions Thin at Safety and Tackle, but Young O-Line Depth Shows Promise Ahead of Rams Clash

As the Detroit Lions push deeper into December football, every practice feels like a playoff drill. Week 15 prep rolled on Thursday, but it didn’t come without a few raised eyebrows — and a few encouraging signs too.

Kerby Joseph Still Missing, Taylor Decker Also Out

The most notable absences? Safety Kerby Joseph and left tackle Taylor Decker.
Joseph participated in a limited role on Wednesday, but the Lions’ coaching staff made it clear they needed to see how he responded before greenlighting his return. After missing seven straight games, the team isn’t taking any chances.

Decker being out adds another wrinkle, as Jared Goff’s blind side protection is always a point of focus — especially with Aaron Donald and the Rams on deck.

Alex Anzalone Returns — A Boost the Defense Needed

Good news did roll in, though.
Linebacker Alex Anzalone, who missed Wednesday’s session due to illness, was back on the field during the media viewing period. His return restores some stability to the middle of the defense, especially against a Rams offense that loves to stress linebackers with motion and play-action.

Christian Mahogany Staying Locked In Despite Injury

Maybe the most uplifting part of Thursday’s report came from rookie offensive lineman Christian Mahogany. Still hopeful to return this season, the sixth-round pick showed optimism and maturity well beyond his years.

Speaking about his recovery, he shrugged off frustration:

“I’ve been through an injury probably far worse… you just got to put your head down, work… get stronger and try and compete to get back for this team.”

For a guy who made waves late in the 2024 season, Mahogany’s perspective is refreshing. He doesn’t believe the offensive line’s chemistry has suffered without him — giving big props to the fill-ins who’ve held things together.

O-Line Depth Quietly Becoming a Strength

Mahogany’s comments reflect something Lions fans should appreciate:
Even with injuries, this O-line room is deep.

“These guys… have done a great job,” he said.
“I love watching these guys play, and hopefully I can just implement myself right back in.”

Detroit’s line may be younger this season, but according to Mahogany, that’s made the unit better, not worse. And with a playoff push coming, having reinforcements waiting in the wings is exactly what top teams rely on.

Looking Ahead: Lions vs. Rams

As Detroit continues prepping for the Los Angeles Rams, the storyline is clear:

  • Safety depth is thin without Joseph.
  • Left tackle depth is being tested again.
  • But the O-line’s young core — and Mahogany’s hopeful return — offer real encouragement.

This team has handled adversity all season. Thursday’s practice was just another reminder: even when bodies are missing, belief is not.
