Detroit’s Defensive Star Set for a Massive Payday
The Detroit Lions are preparing for a crucial offseason move—securing Aidan Hutchinson with a long-term contract extension. After a season-ending injury derailed his 2024 campaign, the young defensive end is expected to return at full strength in 2025, and the Lions are eager to lock him in for the future.
How Much Will Hutchinson Earn?
Hutchinson has quickly become one of the most dominant defensive players in the NFL, and his next contract will likely reflect that. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Lions star could command a deal with an average annual value (APY) in the $40 million range.
“We have two non-quarterbacks in that category with Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett and Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase,” Breer noted. “Houston Texans DE Danielle Hunter and Raiders DE Maxx Crosby both just got nearly $36 million in new-money APY on new deals, too.”
The ‘Trick’ to Hutchinson’s Extension
If the Lions act quickly, they may be able to structure Hutchinson’s contract in a way that benefits both sides. Since he is already owed $25.45 million over the next two years, a new extension could roll that amount into the overall deal.
Breer explained, “Let’s say he, for example, does a four-year, $160 million extension with the Detroit Lions, which would take him through the 2030 season. In that circumstance, the real money on the deal would be $185.45 million over six years, or an average of $30.9 million per year.”
Locking in a Homegrown Star
The Lions selected Hutchinson with the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and he has been a game-changer ever since. Detroit’s front office appears committed to keeping its core intact rather than spending big in free agency.
“That’s a good deal for anyone, given the type of player Hutchinson has become,” Breer said. “A good example of drafting well and paying your own early rather than chasing someone else’s free agents.”
Hutchinson’s return in 2025 will be a major boost for Detroit’s defense, and if the Lions play their cards right, they could have their franchise pass rusher locked in for years to come.
