Lions GM Still Kinda Salty About Ben Johnson Jumping Ship to the Bears
So, the Lions are gearing up for training camp, but there’s still a bit of a sting in the air and it’s not from two-a-days. Detroit’s offensive wizard Ben Johnson dipped out to take the head coaching job with gulp… the Chicago Bears.
Yeah, that’s right. The Bears.
Lions GM Brad Holmes recently opened up about the move on the Green Light podcast, and let’s just say he wasn’t thrilled. Not because Johnson got a gig (Holmes is clearly happy the guy’s moving up), but because it was Chicago. One of Detroit’s most hated rivals. You don’t just lose a coach you give your enemy your secret weapon.
“I knew he interviewed there, but he interviewed for a bunch of spots,” Holmes said. “I honestly thought Chicago was the least likely or maybe I just hoped it was.”
Yeah, Brad, same.
Johnson’s offense helped turn the Lions into a legit playoff team. Now he’s on the other sideline, trying to beat the team he helped build. Kinda awkward, right?
To fill the hole, the Lions brought in John Morton as the new offensive coordinator. People are curious how it’s gonna look with him calling plays, but make no mistake this is a big switch.
And the drama heats up fast: Detroit faces Chicago in Week 2, so we won’t have to wait long to see how this breakup plays out.
