PFF Crowns Lions Backfield as League’s Best

The Detroit Lions might just have the most dangerous backfield in football — and the numbers back it up.

According to PFF, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery make up the top running back duo in the NFL heading into 2025. That’s right — No. 1.

And it’s no fluke.

Last season, the pair combined for a monster 2,199 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. Both ranked in the top 20 in yards after contact — with Gibbs averaging 3.3 and Montgomery at 3.1. Now with Tashard Choice stepping in as the new running backs coach, the Lions are looking to build on that momentum under offensive coordinator John Morton.

It’s not just their ground game, either. This duo is dangerous through the air. Montgomery led all running backs in receiving yards per route run (2.12), while Gibbs wasn’t far behind at 1.65 — good enough for third in the league. Both backs also cracked PFF’s top 10 in overall running back grades for 2024.

Detroit’s offense already led the NFL in drive scoring percentage last season — finishing with points on over 51% of their possessions. Now, with Gibbs and Monty leading the charge again, expect the fireworks to continue in 2025.
