Skubal Unstoppable: Double-Digit Strikeouts and 10th Straight Win

Tarik Skubal continued his dazzling run of dominance on the mound Monday night, striking out 13 batters over seven scoreless innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

With the win, Skubal (10-1) extended his personal winning streak to 10 decisions, reinforcing his status as one of the premier pitchers in baseball this season. The left-hander was nearly untouchable from the start, using a mix of high-90s fastballs and devastating sliders to keep Twins hitters guessing all night.

“It felt like everything was working tonight,” Skubal said postgame. “I trusted my stuff, trusted [catcher Jake Rogers], and just attacked.”

Skubal allowed only two hits and issued just one walk during his 103-pitch outing, lowering his ERA to an impressive 2.29 on the season. The Twins managed only one runner past first base while he was on the mound.

Detroit’s offense gave Skubal just enough cushion, scoring three runs on eight hits. Kerry Carpenter drove in the first run with a single in the fourth inning, and Riley Greene added an RBI double in the sixth. Spencer Torkelson chipped in with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 3-0.

The Tigers’ bullpen held firm after Skubal’s exit. Jason Foley pitched a clean eighth, and Alex Lange closed the door in the ninth for his 15th save of the year.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 42-39 and gained crucial ground in the AL Central race. The Twins, meanwhile, fell to 44-38 and have now lost four of their last six games.

“Skubal was electric,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He set the tone and never let up. That’s what aces do.”

The 13 strikeouts tied a career high for Skubal, who is making a strong case for his first All-Star appearance. Over his last five starts, he’s allowed just four earned runs while striking out 47 in 33 innings.

“He’s been unbelievable,” said Lange. “When he’s on the mound, we feel like we’re going to win every time.”

The Tigers and Twins continue their series Tuesday night, with Detroit’s Reese Olson scheduled to face Minnesota’s Bailey Ober.
