Early Free Agency Moves Heat Up With RFA/ERFA Tender Decisions

As the NFL offseason begins to gain momentum, teams around the league are starting to make important roster decisions through Restricted Free Agent (RFA) and Exclusive Rights Free Agent (ERFA) tenders.
These moves might not generate the same buzz as blockbuster trades or massive free-agent signings, but they are a critical part of roster building. Tendering players allows teams to retain young contributors while maintaining flexibility heading into the heart of free agency.
An ERFA tender is the simplest of the two. When a team places this tender on a player, that player has virtually no negotiating power with other teams. If the player wants to continue playing in the NFL that season, they must sign the deal with their current team. For front offices, this is an easy and low-risk way to keep developing players who have shown potential but haven’t yet accrued enough service time.
Restricted free agents, however, introduce a little more strategy. Teams can place different levels of tenders on these players, each tied to a specific salary and potential draft compensation if another team signs them to an offer sheet. The higher the tender, the more protection the original team receives if another franchise attempts to lure the player away.
For contenders like the Detroit Lions and others across the league, these decisions help preserve roster depth while keeping key developmental players in place. Depth pieces, special teams contributors, and rotational players often fall into this category, making tenders a quiet but essential part of the offseason process.
As the free agency period approaches, these early tender decisions will shape how aggressive teams can be in the open market. By securing certain players now, front offices gain clarity about which positions truly need outside upgrades.
It may not dominate national headlines, but RFA and ERFA tender season is the NFL’s first real step toward building next year’s roster—and every smart team is paying close attention. 🏈🔥
