Ex-Lions QB Finds New NFL Home One Day After Being Released

Adrian Martinez lands with the Jets as his winding football journey continues beyond Detroit

A Quick Turnaround for a Familiar Name

The NFL rarely waits, and for former Detroit Lions quarterback Adrian Martinez, the next opportunity came almost immediately. Just one day after being released by the San Francisco 49ers, Martinez found a new landing spot, signing with the New York Jets’ practice squad and extending a professional journey defined by persistence and adaptability.

Martinez originally entered the league with Detroit as an undrafted free agent in 2023, flashing promise during training camp with his mobility and poise. While he didn’t crack the final roster, his development never stalled — and now, he finds himself back in New York with a chance to remain on the NFL radar.

From Detroit to a Championship Run

Martinez faced long odds from the start in Detroit, entering a quarterback room that also included fellow rookie Hendon Hooker, who at the time was viewed as a long-term development project while recovering from a torn ACL. With limited roster space and an established starter in place, Martinez’s path to playing time was narrow.

Rather than fade away, he redirected his career with remarkable success. The following season, Martinez signed with the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL and delivered one of the league’s most impressive quarterback campaigns. He threw for 1,750 yards, 15 touchdowns and just three interceptions, added 530 rushing yards and three scores, earned All-UFL honors, and capped the run by winning UFL Championship MVP while leading Birmingham to a title.

That performance reopened NFL doors.

Another Opportunity, Another Challenge

Martinez returned to the NFL circuit with stints in New York and San Francisco, joining the 49ers during the season following an injury to Brock Purdy. Though his game action was limited to a kneel-down, his presence was enough to keep him in the conversation.

Now back with the Jets — a team playing out the remainder of a difficult season with no playoff hopes — Martinez could find himself with an opportunity to be evaluated more closely as organizations begin turning their attention toward the future.

His former Detroit counterpart, Hooker, hasn’t been as fortunate. After the Lions moved on from him prior to this season, Hooker landed with the Carolina Panthers before being released in November and has yet to find another NFL home.

Meanwhile in Detroit: Goff Takes Center Stage

While Martinez continues carving his path, Detroit’s quarterback situation remains stable. Jared Goff has been durable, productive, and steady, leading the Lions to consecutive NFC North titles and keeping the team firmly in postseason contention once again.

This weekend presents a familiar storyline as Detroit prepares to face the Los Angeles Rams, Goff’s former team, in a matchup loaded with playoff implications. But the quarterback made it clear the emotional angle no longer defines him.

“It feels like a long time ago and, I think we kind of talked about it earlier in the year of how it’s kind of my career now [I’ve] spent more time here. It certainly feels like a long time ago,” Goff told reporters Wednesday.

“No, not so much anymore,” he added. “And really, we played them in that playoff game, and it was such a big deal and the next year we played them again, and that felt like even less, and so now it’s even further removed.”

Detroit already ended the Rams’ season once before, eliminating them from the playoffs in 2023 en route to an NFC Championship appearance.

Different Paths, Same Goal

From UFL stardom to NFL practice squads, Adrian Martinez continues to chase the same dream — staying ready for when opportunity knocks. His journey may not be linear, but it’s far from over.

And in a league where timing can change everything, finding a new home in 24 hours is proof that perseverance still matters.
