Former Lions WR Quintez Cephus Waived by Rams Ahead of Training Camp

Quintez Cephus, once considered a rising talent in the Detroit Lions’ offense, is back on the open market. The Los Angeles Rams released the 27-year-old wide receiver on Wednesday, ending his brief stint with the team.

Cephus initially signed with the Rams’ practice squad last September, reuniting with ex-Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who he played with during his rookie year in Detroit. He later signed a reserve/future contract in January but was cut before training camp.

Since his departure from the Lions, Cephus had short stops with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans but never matched the promise he showed in 2020. That year, he caught 20 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games (two starts) for Detroit.

Injuries hampered his development, but his time with the Lions effectively ended in 2023 when he was suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. Cephus, along with three other Lions players, faced discipline for betting on NFL games. Unlike Jameson Williams, who remains with the team after a shorter suspension, Cephus and C.J. Moore were both cut after receiving at least year-long bans.

Across 22 career games, all with Detroit, Cephus recorded 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns.
