D.J. Reed Opens Up About Gratitude, Growth, and Readiness After Hamstring Injury
“Grateful” to Be Back
Detroit Lions cornerback D.J. Reed returned to practice on Wednesday, marking his first time on the field since being placed on injured reserve on October 1 due to a hamstring injury suffered against the Cleveland Browns. Speaking with reporters, Reed summed up his emotions in a single word: “grateful.”
“Just gratitude,” Reed said. “I just thank God. When I was out there, and man, you just can’t take this game for granted. I’m just happy to be back with the guys, and man, just happy — a lot of gratitude.”
At the time of the injury, Reed was in the middle of an impressive performance, recording four tackles, three passes defended, and an interception before being escorted off the field.
A New Perspective from the Sidelines
While watching from home, Reed observed his teammates go 3-2 in his absence, including losses to the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings. The time off, though challenging, gave him a broader perspective on the team’s resilience and depth, particularly in the secondary.
“Injuries happen in football,” Reed explained. “Just look at this year, our secondary guys have been pretty banged up. I feel like overall it makes the secondary and the team stronger.”
Players such as Amik Robertson, Rock Ya-Sin, Nick Whiteside, and Arthur Maulet have stepped up in his absence, something Reed openly appreciated.
Ready to Make an Immediate Impact
When asked about his readiness to return, Reed was confident he could step onto the field as early as Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, though he emphasized that the coaching staff would make the final call.
“I’m a gamer, so I’m ready, but that’s not my call,” Reed said. “Obviously, they’re going to be smart about it. But if you ask me, I’m ready to play. That’s just my mindset.”
With the Eagles boasting a dangerous receiver duo in DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown, Reed’s presence could be a timely boost for a Lions secondary dealing with cornerback Terrion Arnold being in concussion protocol.
Hungry and Focused
Reflecting on his injury, Reed admitted the setback was a blow at the time, especially since he felt he was gaining momentum in his season. Yet the experience only fueled his determination to return stronger.
“I went from thinking like, dang, my season’s over with. This is very unfortunate, especially because I felt like I was getting into the groove of playing here,” Reed said. “And now I’m going to be back, my mindset is just I’m really hungry. I’m ready to help this team make that push.”
Reed’s return not only strengthens the Lions’ defense but also adds an emotional lift, as a veteran cornerback returns motivated, grateful, and eager to make an impact during a critical stretch of the season.
