You’d think by now every young football player would know the name Calvin Johnson. He’s one of the greatest wide receivers to ever step on a football field, and an all-time Detroit Lions legend. But apparently, that name didn’t ring a bell for one New York Giants rookie.
Cam Skattebo, a 23-year-old running back out of Arizona State, was recently a guest on the St. Brown Brothers Podcast, hosted by Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown. The segment was light and fun—until it turned into a “name that NFL legend” game. That’s when things got awkward.
Skattebo stared blankly at the screen when Megatron’s face popped up. Amon-Ra tried to help him out: “He’s one of the best receivers ever. He played for the Lions.” Still nothing. Eventually, Skattebo guessed: “It’s Megatron? Is it?” You could almost hear Lions fans groaning across the country.
It didn’t stop there. Skattebo struggled to name other all-time greats like Brett Favre, Kam Chancellor, and even Golden Tate—another former Lion. Look, the guy’s young. And sure, maybe he didn’t grow up watching these legends tear it up on Sundays. But still… not knowing Calvin Johnson?
Skattebo isn’t a scrub, though. He had a breakout run with Arizona State and could be a key piece for the Giants offense this season. Coincidentally, the Lions host the Giants on Nov. 23. Someone might want to point out Johnson’s name in the Ford Field Ring of Honor just in case he needs a refresher.
