Nationals Crush Tigers’ Hopes with Six-Run Eighth, Earn Doubleheader Split

WASHINGTON — Nathaniel Lowe crushed a three-run triple in the eighth inning, propelling the Washington Nationals to a 9-4 comeback win over the AL-leading Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night, earning a split in the day’s doubleheader.

Lowe finished with four RBIs, while Josh Bell added three more for Washington, which snapped a home skid by winning just its second game at Nationals Park since June 7.

Detroit, coming off a 11-2 rout in the first game behind Riley Greene’s two home runs and career-high six RBIs, looked poised for a sweep after Jahmai Jones’ two-run double gave them a 4-3 lead in the seventh.

But the Nationals broke through against reliever Tommy Kahnle (0-1), who gave up two singles and a walk before Lowe’s bases-loaded triple cleared the right-field line. Lowe then scored on Bell’s double to cap Washington’s six-run eighth inning. Paul DeJong added an RBI single, and Jacob Young drove in another run with a grounder.

Cole Henry (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn his first big league win.

For Detroit, Jack Flaherty struck out nine over five innings but allowed three early runs. Spencer Torkelson and Colt Keith contributed RBI doubles to keep the Tigers in front until Washington’s late surge.
